The My Passport Backup Software The first time you install the WD My Passport Ultra 1TB drive into a USB port it will be automatically detected by your PC just like a traditional flash drive and you can open it up and look at the contents. On the drive WD already has five folders and an application that you can run to setup the supplied WD software. The folder titled ‘User Manuals’ has PDF files in numerous languages that have a user manual that goes into great detail on how to use the My Passport. If you don’t want to use any of the WD software you can delete the 300MB worth of files and use the drive how you see fit.

If you run the WD Apps Setup executable, you’ll begin installing all the WD Software. You have to accept the EULA. After you accept the license agreement you get to select which of the three software features that you wish to install. By default WD has them all set to install. The WD Drive Utilities is a program that allows you do erase, perform diagnostics and also a registration page to register your device.

WD security allows you to place passwords and to encrypt your files. WD SmartWare is needed for automatic and continuous backup of all your files. We’ve installed all of these utilities before, but for this review we will focus on just the WD SmartWare utility. You might only need this as well if you never plan on taking the My Passport out of the house, so no passwords are needed.

Sure, someone could break in and steal it and gain access to our data, but that risk might be worth it to some. You can then select how often the backup is done and the default setting is continuous. The screen you don’t want to ever find yourself on is the the retrieve screen, which is where you go when you need to get files from a backup. You can change settings of WD SmartWare under the Settings menu. Here you can change the file history backup versions to keep for each file under file history (default is 5), the retrieve folder location, update the software or edit your Dropbox account information. The final tab is ‘help’ and there you can find the answers to most of your basic questions on how the utility works. My windows 10 computer is recognizing this device for saving/opening files but will not recognize it as a device for backup. I am also unable to open the WD Backup app to run scheduled backups through that; I have used this device and app on this windows 10 computer but it has been several months since I've had it plugged in to be able to backup. I have tried unistalling and reinstalling the WDBackup app and was able to re-setup the backup schedule and it acted as if all was going to work.but it then didn't perform the backup and I now still can't open the app.other apps (such as utilities) open for this device.just not Backup. Would really like to be able to backup my computer (other than saving files one at a time in full format).:).

Windows 10 Restore using WD Passport Ultra external drive I have the version 1607 of Windows 10. I have connected a WD Passport Ultra external drive to it which is recognized by the Windows Explorer. The Backup software shows the WD Passport Ultra drive under the hard drive selection. I ok the backup and the software puts the system image (?) on the WD Passport Ultra. After the Create a System Image is complete, I am then able to use the Windows Explorer to see the files/folders that the Create a System Image co to it.

Now while in the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) I select under Restore I select another backup to restore files from. This gives me the Restore Files (Advanced) popup. The popup shows a window that indicates if the backup location isn't listed below to connect the drive and select refresh. It also offers the option to Browse a network location.

So I browse and find the WD Passport Ultra drive and then select the folder with the backup files in it. Unfortunately it is at this point that the software responds that it cannot find a backup file. So despite the fact that the Backup software put it on the WD Passport Ultra, the Restore software doesn't want to recognize it as backup software. So at this point making a System Image ends up being a waste of time since it can't be restored unless someone knows how to get around this.
